Professor Rowan Strong is Emeritus Professor of Church, Murdoch University; and Professor of Church History at Wollaston College, The University of Divinity. He has degrees in History and Theology in New Zealand (BA Victoria University of Wellington; LTh Joint Board of Theological Studies, New Zealand), and in Church History from Australia and Scotland (MTheol Melbourne College of Divinity; PhD University of Edinburgh; DD University of Edinburgh.

His earlier research was concerned with the Oxford Movement in Anglicanism, and the history of Christianity in Industrial Britain resulting in three books – Alexander Penrose Forbes: The First Tractarian Bishop (Oxford, 1995); Episcopalianism in Nineteenth-Century Scotland: Religious Responses to a Modernizing Society (Oxford, 2002); with Carol Herringer (eds.) Edward Bouverie Pusey and the Oxford Movement (2012) His work over the past decade has been concerned with the interaction between British imperialism and Christianity. As well as numerous articles and book chapters on colonial Australia, New Zealand, and metropolitan Britain, his principal monographs are Anglicanism and the British Empire (Oxford, 2007) and Victorian Christianity and Emigrant Voyages to British Colonies c.1840-c.914 (Oxford, 2017). Inter-denominational history has also figured in his book Chaplains of the Royal Australian Navy, 1912 to the Vietnam War (2012). Professor Strong is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Dr Mark Jennings

Mark Jennings is Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies at Wollaston Theological College in Perth, Western Australia, and the Continuing Education Coordinator for the Anglican Diocese of Perth.

Mark completed the Bachelor of Theology at Tabor College in Perth, and then finished off the BTheol at Murdoch University, gaining First Class Honours in New Testament under the supervision of Professor William Loader. Mark completed his PhD in 2010 at Murdoch University. Mark’s first monograph, based on his doctoral dissertation, was published under the title Exaltation: Ecstatic Experience in Pentecostalism and Popular Music (2014, Peter Lang). Recently, Mark has undertaken qualitative research exploring LGBTQ+ experiences of Australian Pentecostalism. A monograph based on this research, entitled Happy: LGBTQ+ experiences of Australian Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity is to be published in 2023 by Palgrave Macmillan.

Mark teaches in the area of Religious Studies, particularly Religion in Australian Society. Mark has also coordinated units in Human Rights and Faith, Introduction to the New Testament, and Introduction to Christian Doctrine. As part of his role as Continuing Education Coordinator for the Anglican Diocese of Perth, Mark coordinates the Wollaston Certificate in Theology, a sub-tertiary theology certificate for those seeking to deepen their theological understanding and Biblical and religious literacy. Mark also teaches in the Wollaston Certificate for Anglican Leadership, which is for educators in Anglican Schools Commission schools seeking executive and senior positions.

Mark have been interviewed on a number of occasions for both radio and newspapers, and has been quoted in Australian newspapers and other publications such as The Guardian, The Herald-Sun, and The Monthly. In addition, Mark has written expert pieces on Pentecostalism, the Israel Folau case, university education, and LGBTQ+ people and faith for The Conversation, ABC Religion and Ethics, and Eureka Street.

Mark is also involved in the Anglican Formation programme at Wollaston Theological College, and on occasion presents teaching sessions for local parishes and churches throughout Perth.

Dr Robert Myles

Robert Myles is Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Director of Research at Wollaston Theological College, University of Divinity. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, Robert holds a PhD from the University of Auckland, where he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis. His education includes degrees in Philosophy and Theology, also from the University of Auckland, along with a Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Studies from the University of Notre Dame Australia. Before assuming his current position at Wollaston in mid-2021, Robert held full-time teaching and research positions at the University of Auckland (2015-2016) and Murdoch University (2017-2021).

Robert’s research focuses on two main themes: (1) the examination of social and economic upheaval during the formative period of the early Jesus movement; and (2) ideological and political interpretations of New Testament texts. He is the author and editor of several books and a number of articles and book chapters on the historical Jesus and the Gospels through various critical lenses including especially those of historical materialism, masculinity studies, and reception history. Robert is an elected member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas and an active participant in the Society of Biblical Literature. He currently serves as the Executive Editor of the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus and was previously co-managing editor of The Bible and Critical Theory.

Complementing his research and administrative activities, Robert teaches several units for the University of Divinity including New Testament and its WorldConflict in CorinthJudaism in the Time of Jesus, and Decolonising the Gospels.

Robert is open to enquiries from prospective doctoral and minor thesis students in any area of New Testament studies, especially those wanting to explore the implications of “history from below”. He has previously supervised theses on topics such as the resurrection of Jesus and postcolonial readings of the Gospels.

Outside of his University of Divinity duties, Robert contributes to non-accredited educational initiatives within the Anglican Diocese of Perth, including teaching and professional development opportunities for lay people, clergy, and secondary school teachers. He currently serves as a lay member of the Perth Anglican Synod and is an elected representative to the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia.
